Maple has been for years the most preferred and chosen wood among drummers for entire drum kits and snare drums. There are good reasons for this due to the specific sound properties that are exhibited in the wood itself. Slow grown maple trees have very fine growth rings and a very straight grain. This makes maple snare drums very resonate and produces a very warm tone which is full of beautiful overtones. Maple Snare drums that are solid shell in construction and also have multiple plies will have increased projection and a stronger attack. The more plies of maple the louder the snare but the wood tones also diminished in a equal proportion. Maple has what is referred to as an even tone meaning that the high, mid, and low frequencies are equally proportioned and present in the sound when the snare drum is played. This is the primary reason that maple is so highly sought after and why maple snare drums are a good choice for an all around "go to" snare drum.
