Ludwig Snare Drums
In 1909, brothers William F. Ludwig and Theo Ludwig founded a drum company called Ludwig and Lugwig. They began manufacturing bass drum pedals that was capable of playing faster beats then other products at that time. The company quickly grew, and started developing many different types of drums, especially brass snare drums and wooden drums. After the death of William Ludwig, in 1973, the company was taken over by his son, William F. Ludwig, Jr. In 1981, The Selmer Company acquired Ludwig.
Throughout Ludwig's history, they have introduced innovations in drum production, especially in the finishes and materials. They're well known for their legendary snare drums. The Black Beauty snare drum, for instance, is a nickel-plated brass, hand-engraved shell. It was introduced in the 1920s and was reissued in the 70s and 90s. It's highly sought after by players and collectors alike. In the 20s, the Black Beauty retailed for $45-$55, but today is worth between $1000-$3000.
Professionals have used Ludwig snare drums for many years. The combination of design, construction and appearance makes them so desirable. The Supersonic snare was originally made of chrome-plated brass, and today is made of chrome-plated aluminum alloy. They're famous for their metal snares, however they also offer maple snares with a plastic pearl wrap.
The Ludwig snare drum is probably the most played and recoded percussion instrument of our time. Top musicians, like Ringo Starr and John Bonham used a Ludwig for it's distinct sound, and flare.
